No textbooks, no flashcards, no grammar drills — just hours of listening to Portuguese content I could mostly understand. Six months in, here’s an honest report on what that’s actually produced.
The method
Comprehensible input means consuming material that’s just slightly above your current level — understandable enough to follow, challenging enough to stretch you. I started with slow, simplified podcasts aimed at learners and gradually moved to native content: news, interviews, and eventually a telenovela I’m mildly embarrassed to admit I’m invested in.
Where I am now
I can follow most conversational Portuguese without subtitles. My output still lags noticeably behind my comprehension — I understand far more than I can produce, which the method predicts but is still humbling in practice.
What surprised me
How little it felt like “studying.” Most days it was just something playing in the background while I cooked. The consistency mattered more than the intensity ever did.
